Migrant Trail 2009
From Sásabe, MX to Tucson, AZ - 75 miles
Under the leadership of the Coalición of Derechos Humanos located in Tucson, AZ, my colleague, David McCabe and I, joined a group of social activists, academics and students in the migrant trail from Sásabe, MX to Tucson, AZ. We did not walk to mimic the migrant experience but to honor migrants and to bring attention to the failing immigration policies of the U.S. government. The militarization of the border, the building of the wall, the virtual fencing of the U.S. border push migrants to find new ways to cross. As a result they are risking their lives in more treacherous terrains. From October 2010 to June 2011, 128 migrants have already died in the Arizona desert.
